Town planning board meets behind closed doors to get legal regarding wind-turbine farms

After the New York City company proposed the wind-turbine farm for the area a couple of years ago, residents of the area organized as the Concerned Citizens of Cattaraugus County group to keep such a farm out of the area. The Concerned Citizens group, advised by attorney Gary Abraham, fears the proposed 29 wind-turbine farm will create noise, aesthetic and environmental issues for the community.

Opposition left blowing in the wind

Two years after hundreds of local residents and the township's council vehemently opposed a large wind farm, plans are moving forward to start construction.
Officials with the Sydenham Wind Energy Centre say they will start building their $160-million farm in 2011 if Ontario Power Authority (OPA) approval comes through and once an environmental assessment is complete.

Some of Rhode Island's largest users of electricity have come out for the first time in opposition to a proposed power-purchase agreement between National Grid and the developer of an eight-turbine wind farm in waters off Block Island. ..."We have concluded that this contract includes a price that is so high that it more than negates any other potential attractive features."

Mason County Board wants meeting with Oceana County Board to discuss offshore wind farm

The Mason County Board of Commissioners concluded Tuesday that a decision on a proposed offshore wind farm in Lake Michigan should be made after a joint meeting with the Oceana County Board.
Chairman Michael Schneider reminded fellow board members that this is the first written and signed proposal they've had from Minnesota-based Scandia Wind LLC and Havgul Clean Energy AS of Norway.

Wind turbine meeting draws a crowd

Fritwell wind farm 'too near to homes', inquiry told

Enel: Turbine collapse could have 'significant impact' on wind industry

Engineers probing the collapse of a 190-ton turbine in rural Madison County have a lot of work ahead of them because the type of crash that occurred at Fenner Wind Farm appears to be unprecedented, officials from the wind farm operator said.
The turbine that crashed at about 4 a.m. Dec. 27, 2009, on the wind farm located northeast of Cazenovia became dislodged from its foundation.

The government's nuclear plans are opposed by some environmental groups as being too costly.
But analysis by Parsons Brinckerhoff, a company backing plans for an offshore wind grid, estimates nuclear generation costs to be 6-8 pence per kilowatt hour (p/KWh), including decommissioning and waste disposal, compared to 15-21 p/KWh for offshore wind.

Ocean Gate windmills draw mixed reviews

Three months ago, Ocean Gate was abuzz with excitement as it prepared to celebrate a windmill, which local officials said would lower the electric bills at the municipal building. But shortly after the switch was turned on, problems began.
Residents living on three sides of the turbine began to complain about the noise - a constant metallic drone - as well as light reflecting off the rotors. With the prospect of another 50-kilowatt windmill being built in the next year, the complaints have gotten louder.

Villagers in North Yorkshire claim trucks travelling past their homes to get to a construction site are causing structural damage to their properties.
A wind farm is being built at Newland, Selby and vehicles have been accessing the site via a narrow lane.

State seeks input on offshore wind

The Michigan Great Lakes Wind Council spent a year studying the issue of offshore wind farm locations before providing its recommendations to the state's legislature.
Now that work is done, the council has scheduled three public meetings to learn what the public thinks (see schedule).

Clipper chief exec resigns as company braces for 2009 losses

The company behind plans to build the world's largest wind turbine yesterday announced its chief executive had resigned after just 18 months in the job, confirming that it expects to post a loss for the second half of 2009 in the process.
AIM-listed wind turbine maker Clipper Windpower blamed order deferrals and the delayed commissioning of new turbines for contributing to the poor results.

Red Wing lawmaker's wind turbine bill gets rejected

A Red Wing lawmaker's bill to give counties more regulation of proposed wind turbines was rejected by a House committee Monday amid fears it would hurt the state's wind industry.
Rep. Tim Kelly, R-Red Wing, sponsored the bill, which would allow county boards to impose stricter siting requirements for wind turbine projects.

Wind turbine ordinance still up in the air in Kochville

Planning Commission members tabled further discussion on a wind turbine ordinance for Kochville Township Monday after a presentation by Bruce Palmer, zoning and planning administrator for Bridgeport Township.
Palmer shared the process and eventual ordinance that Bridgeport put together to regulate the growing demand for wind turbines at businesses and residences in its township.

Town residents voted decisively against wind turbines Monday night.
By a 245-18 vote, they asked their Town Board to support a four-part strategy to head off a wind farm development that proposes to build 100 turbines in southern Brown County, 54 of them in Morrison.

Wind turbine accident in Germany

local news stations say that a violent and unexpected gust of wind caused the rotor to take- off pulling the crane's boom and Jib with it, causing it to collapse. The boom, jib and rotor with its blades came crashing to the ground. The crane remained stable but the turbine components are totally destroyed along with the crane's boom and jib.

United front urged on offshore wind turbine plan

Area municipalities and the Essex Region Conservation Authority should develop a regional response to the 700 offshore turbines proposed for lakes Erie and St. Clair, Kingsville council agreed Monday.
"It appears to me the whole thing is stacked against municipalities and citizens," Coun. Tamara Stomp said of the new Green Energy Act.

In his letter dated Dec. 22, 2009 Vermont Fish and Wildlife community ecologist Eric Sorenson details why the Vermont Community Wind Farm proposed for western Vermont would have "an undue adverse effect" on the area. The project could have as many as 45 wind turbines sited along several ridgelines.
