New transmission lines for Gratiot wind farm now being built

The spot where trucks and materials are pulling in and out of Begole Road at M-46 is a staging area for the building of a new ITC transmission substation.
It will also include upgrades to its high voltage transmission lines.

Water authority waiting to issue decision on Laurel wind turbine; comments close today

The utility is waiting until the public comment period ends on Friday to decide on whether to proceed.
"It's still too early to tell," said Ms. Gallagher. "We're still at the same place."
Gayle Marriner-Smith, who lives near the turbine site, is one of the neighbors who has helped collect hundreds of signatures on a petition against the project.

[Windfall is] a reminder that whenever a virtually unregulated industry (as in this case) offers capitalists a chance to defraud the little guy and make a bundle, they'll do it. It's a tantalizing case study that suggests ordinary people still have the power to steer a course between faceless bureaucracies and greedy capitalists, but only just - and only if they can find a way to overcome their differences and work together.

"Windfall" left me disheartened. I thought wind energy was something I could believe in. This film suggests it's just another corporate flim-flam game. Of course, the documentary could be mistaken, and there are no doubt platoons of lawyers, lobbyists and publicists to say so. How many of them live on wind farms?

Wind moratorium passes; hearings scheduled

The move was made last week by the full county board after originally being proposed in November. It freezes all potential wind project development in the county and allows the zoning ordinance effecting wind farms to be updated.

The growing and disproportionate 'take' of species of conservation concern also appears to be an issue relative to the overall number of birds killed, and that is another cause for worry," stated Dr. Albert Manville of the FWS's Division of Migratory Bird Management.

Newspaper stories from Missouri, Oregon, New York, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Britain, Australia, Canada, Taiwan, and New Zealand indicate that the wind-turbine-noise problem is global and that the frustration among rural landowners is growing.
The wind-energy lobby desperately wants to downplay the problems associated with low-frequency noise and infrasound. That's not surprising. The industry has no solution for the noise problem, except, of course, to increase the setbacks between wind turbines and residential areas.

The wind industry "simply cannot continue to rely on the American taxpayer," said Rep. Mike Pompeo (R., Kan.), who has a bill that would cut many energy-related credits from the tax code. "Each time it comes up to a year of expiration, they say, 'If we just get a few more years our technology will mature and we will become more competitive.' It's time for them to figure out how to do that."

Until recently Duxbury was planning to build a wind turbine, too.
But that plan came under attack by a group of residents who said they feared that living near a turbine would undermine their health, lower their property values, and alter the neighborhood's residential character. They hired an attorney, produced a report attacking the financial basis of the project, and won a vote from selectmen urging the committee not to seek funds for the project.

The Floyd County draft ordinance prohibits the construction, repair or improvement of structures more than 40 feet high on any ridge 2,000 feet or more above sea level and 500 feet or more above an adjacent valley floor, a geographical catchment area that covers much of Floyd County. The ordinance makes an exception for water, radio, telecommunications and television towers.

A GE wind turbine owned and operated by Noble Environmental caught fire in high wind conditions. Firefighters were not equipped to address the fire. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Spurlens Rig windfarm bid blown out

The Ministry of Defence lodged a complaint against the Spurlens Rig development as the site lies within the 50 kilometre radius of the Eskdalemuir Seismic Array at Langholm.
The application from developers Lomond Energy was also refused by Scottish Borders Council's Principal Planning Officer Craig Millar.

Wind-turbine fire under investigation

Flames were consuming the top portion of a wind turbine behind the Rand Hill Dairy Farm, which is across the street from their house.
"The fire caught one of the blades and made it look like a Roman candle," Phil said. "There was a snow squall that night, but we could see the flames burning right through it."
