Scarborough Bluffs, wind turbines, wind farms, Toronto Hydro, Ontario, Canada, Guildwood VillageWind plants in Ontario as of Dec. 31, 2008

Number of Turbines = 429

Max. Capacity : 703 MW per hour

Actual Production = approx. 30% or 211 MW per hour

Approx 30,000 hectares of lands were optioned for wind power development in Ontario to accomodate the above turbines, much of it was useable farmland.

Carbon dioxide emissions calculated to have been displaced (if claims are accurate): 430grams x 211MW per hr. = approx. 91,000 grams per hour.

. ...more

While not advocating for nuclear power over wind power, it is noteworthy that Ontario would need more than 1200 wind turbines and almost 100,000 hectares in order to be able to shut down ONE nuclear station equivalent to Bruce A G3. You do the math - there are 14 nuclear plants in Ontario today.

Dear Sir/Madam,

RE: Request for Province Wide Moratorium and Comprehensive Health Study on Industrial Scale Wind Turbine Projects

The controversy of whether industrial wind projects produce adverse health effects continues to escalate due to a lack of current statistically reliable and accurate data. Individuals who have been adversely affected are coming forward on a daily basis; however, many are being 'bought out' in exchange for signing non-disclosure agreements, preventing them from speaking publicly about the health issues they have experienced when industrial wind developments have been established close to their homes.

Current Ministry of the Environment guidelines results in minimum setbacks for commercial wind turbines (i.e., 1.5 to 2.0 MW nameplate capacities) of approximately 400 meters from residences. In addition, these setbacks appear to be based on noise levels only, which is unacceptable. In countries with more industrial wind energy experience (e.g. UK, France), residential setbacks have been increasing, to such distances as 1500 meters. Most medical and research professionals today recommend a minimum setback of 2.0 km.

We, as Canadian and Ontario Citizens request the following:

1. That a comprehensive and scientifically robust health study be conducted by an independent organization;
2. That the setbacks from residences reflect the resultant findings, benchmarks set by those countries with more industrial wind energy experience and the recommendations of independent health professionals, and
3. That a province-wide moratorium on all wind farms be put in place immediately until such a study has been completed.

'Studies' quoted by various municipalities in Ontario have been based on a literature review only, do not meet criteria for a proper epidemiological study, and do not include data from Ontario communities with current exposures to wind turbines.

We feel it is the responsibility of the Province of Ontario to ensure that such a study is conducted in an independent manner in order to put the protection of our health ahead of wind company and green image interests. We, as citizens, have the right to know how much industrial wind developments will impact our health and safety and we are requesting that you take immediate action on this issue.
